Much of the fall and spring I'm traveling and attending evening recruiting events, so I'm unable to participate in special events that are going on on-campus. Now that it's off-season for the next couple months, I'm able to attend, and many of these events are open to the community!
On December 1st I attended the Fall Arts & Crafts Fair. I was joined by Mrs. Totoni, who was my neighbor from where I grew up. She brought her daughter and my good friend Nicole (yes, another Nicole and she too is a UW-Parkside Alumna!). The three of us have made it our fun tradition each year to attend the Fall and Summer Craft Fairs at UW-P. We were able to get some great holiday shopping done at some fabulous prices - and the best thing is that it's all home-made and very unique! We were so glad we purchased the $5.00 ACE tickets so we could gain early entry 1 hour before the general public, because once they opened the doors at 10a.m. the place was packed and certain items sold out!
On December 8th I attended The UW-Parkside Theatre Company's production of The Laramie Project with a good friend (another UW-P alum) and his partner. It was such an amazing show. It was set in a very small theatre, so the experience was very intimate and the staging was extremely creative considering the small space. The show documents the lives of the people around Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming. No theatre production really has moved me emotionally, until now - it was beyond words. All I have to say, is that I was glad to have Kleenex in my purse - I needed it. More information about the Larmamie Project at Parkside can be found here: The Laramie Project (scroll down to Laramie Project - also, the study guide has some great information).
Today, are the Winter Cultural Celebrations sponsored by the Office of
Multicultural Student Affairs and Student Activities. This is one of my favorite events of the year! All of the different cultures on our campus come together
to share their various traditions they celebrate over the holiday season. It's so much fun! Insieme Italia (Italian-American Student Union and club I co-advise with Sergio Correa), is having our secretary dress up as La Befana to hand out candy and we are featuring Italian Christmas sweets and a video about Italian Holiday Customs at our table. Last night I packed up my antique Italian Nativity and had it all ready to go for our booth, but this morning our daughter woke up ill, so we're headed to the doctor instead! If you're on campus today stop by the table at noon for some fresh marzipan, torrone, pannetone and other dolci - and say hi to La Befana for me! She may just have some candy for you if you're good!
See you on the road,
~ Nicole
