Where in the world... are YOU?!

Since September you have been able to see where in the world I am, but I want to know - where in the world are you?!

If you are thinking of UW-Parkside but have not visited, put us on your to-do list! 
We have so many things to show you!

Freshmen and Sophomores:  It's never too early!

Juniors: This is known as your "college shopping and visit" year.

Seniors:  If you haven't visited yet, you need to do so ASAP!

Transfers: We know you've been to college, but we are different than the last university you were at - get to know us!

Students over 25 yrs: Thinking of coming back to school or a change of career?  We have numerous programs and services available for you as well as a very active campus organization - Parkside Adult Student Alliance!  Visit us to learn more!

When is the best time to visit?  If you are able to come between now and the first week of May, while classes are in session and during the school day so you can see the school at it's best - with our students! 

You can come during the week to schedule an appointment with an admission counselor as well as a tour (led by one of our Campus Ambassadors).

You can attend one of our Spring Preview Nights (featuring on-site admissions for high school seniors), or we offer Saturday visit opportunities for those whose schedules do not allow for visits during traditional "work/school" hours.

Ranger Invasion at Badger High!

Parkside was represented strong last week at Badger high school's Career Pathway's College and Career Day.

The event put on by the high school for their students to explore different post-secondary educational and career options. 

There was a morning college and career fair where Parkside had two tables.  I was there with a table full of admissions and academic program information, while two of Parkside student leaders Tyson Fettes and Mike Spiegelhoff, held it down at another table with information on athletics, student life, etc.  Somehow, Tyson and Mike  managed to get a ton of info cards that were all from the ladies at Badger High and their table was the most popular one there.  LOL!  We were so busy (and it was so loud in there), that I came back to Parkside with no voice and  it's a week later and I'm still trying to gain it back!

The afternoon was full of various career panels.  Students had a choice of attending two. 

I want to thank Tyson and Mike for helping out!  Thanks again guys!!!

Knowledge for College #8: Reality Check Checklist Time!

If you're in high school, you're smack in the middle of your academic year. If you're a Junior or Senior, it's time to take serious check in what has to be done for your college admissions process... or what I call time to take a reality check of your checklist - to take a cold hard look at your "college to-do checklist" to see what you've actually done and what you still have to do - whatever you have not done is your ACTION PLAN - here's the "bare bones" urgent "to-do" items for your "college checklist":

FRESHMEN & SOPHOMORES:

- Met with your guidance counselor to let them know you want to go to college and started your post-secondary (post-high school) plan.  Started to research colleges and universities through resources available at your high school (college resource center, your guidance counselor) and on-line websites such as fastweb.com.

- Maintain an academic rigor as strong as you are able to handle of college-prep curriculum  (English, Math, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Foreign Language, Fine Arts).

JUNIORS:

- Visit your top 3-5 schools of choice (open house and/or tour and meet with an admission counselor.
- Register for the April ACT (and take the APRIL 2008 ACT)
- Maintain an academic rigor as strong as you are able to handle of college-prep curriculum  (English, Math, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Foreign Language, Fine Arts).

SENIORS:

- ALL OF THE ABOVE FOR JUNIORS* and...
- Applied for admission to all of your top schools (and "backup" school/s). (For students starting Fall 2008, Priority application deadline for admission is March 1, 2008! If you want to apply to Parkside and haven't already contact us at 262.595.2355 to speak with a counselor today!  You may also consult the UW-P Admissions website)
- Apply for financial aid (For students starting Fall 2008, Priority application deadline for Financial Aid is March 1, 2008!)
- Apply for UW-P scholarships (Deadline: Must be accepted for admission and have the full scholarship application complete and turned into the scholarship office by February 1st to be considered.)
- If you've already been accepted to UW-P be sure to send in your housing contract/deposit ASAP.

Charlie Schultz had it right: Bein' Great in 08!

I had lunch with some good friends today - and we were talking about the New Year and the resolutions that we were trying to stick to... one of them said she had a list and she was strivin' to "bein' great in 08!"  (Sheila - you need to trademark that one!).

Many resolutions that people have deal with always deal with health and money - but what about something just a little bit closer to home?  The other day another friend had sent me something via email and I just loved it!  I thought it really fit in with the topic "New Year" and wanted to post it here - just the kind of philosophy to start the New Year!:

The Charlie Schulz Philosophy:

(The following is the philosophy of Charles Schulz, the creator of the "Peanuts" comic strip):

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.

2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.

3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America pageant.

4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel Prize.

5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.

6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.   


How did you do? 

The point is, none of us remembers the headliners of yesterday.

These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields.

But the applause dies..

Awards tarnish.    

Achievements are forgotten.

Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.


NOW... Answer the following...

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.

2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.  

3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile. 

4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.

5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.   

Was that Easier?  

The lesson:

People who make a difference to you are not the ones with credentials, money or awards.
   

They are the ones that care.
