UW-Parkside Scholarship Deadline Feb. 1st

If you are a high school senior who has already been accepted to UW-Parkside or a continuing student, just a final reminder that February 1st is the deadline for UW-Parkside's Application for Undergraduate Scholarships!

Knowledge for College #15: FREE Test Prep!

 Yes, I said FREE test prep!  How exciting is that?!  Ok, not as exciting if I had said "Free PlayStation 3," but free test prep is more valuable than a PS3.  Don't believe me?  Some test prep class instruction and software programs can cost as much as a PS3, however there are low cost and free alternatives out there if you know where to look.  Plus if you take 1 hour off a week from video gaming, myspace/facebook and other online social networking, texting, etc., and put that one hour per week into test prep from now until your spring college entrance exam, you have a higher probability of raising your test score, thus raising your competitiveness for scholarships.

The good folks at The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, the University of Wisconsin System, the Wisconsin Technical College System and the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, teamed up to create Knowhow2goWisconsin.org which is a great college planning site and it's even better because it now features FREE online test prep open to all students.  All you have to do is set up a free account (login and password).

What kind of online test prep?  I'm glad you asked.  

All are easy to use, online and self-paced, interactive tutorials and practice sessions.  One great feature is a vocabulary builder that contains over 2,000 words and adapts to your skill level.   It offers formats to familarize you on the ACT and SAT (and for those of you out there considering grad school, the GRE is covered as well). 

This is a no-brainer!  Test prep, at your finger tips, available 24/7 and best of all - it's free.  This will give you the extra edge to give you that extra bit of knowledge and confidence to succeed going into your college entrance exam/s this spring.

Knowlege for College #14: Get Help Filing Financial Aid

Happy 2009! 

If you're a high school senior that is following a college-planning timetable, you should have already applied to your colleges and heard back from the majority of them as to whether or not you have been accepted for admission.  With acceptance letters in hand and deciding which school you will attend, you're also probably wondering, "how am I going to pay for it?"   College Goal Sunday helps you to begin to answer that question.

College Goal Sunday is a free national event that will help you with your financial plan of action.  It's a 2-hour program that gives step-by-step instructions on how to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), ask one on one questions to financial aid professionals and gather more information on preparing for college.  The event will be held throughout your state on February 21 and/or 22nd, the date varies by location. (Yes, I know it is being held on Saturdays in some locations - the program originally was only held on Sundays, hence the name).

You will need to bring the following to College Goal Sunday: 

• Correct Social Security numbers (can be found on Social Security card)
• Driver's license (if any)
• 2008 federal tax returns
• 2007 federal tax returns, if 2008 returns are not complete
• 2008 untaxed income records (Social Security, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, welfare or veterans benefits records)
• 2008 bank statements
• 2008 business and investment mortgage information, business and farm records, and stock, bond, and other investment records
• Alien registration card (if you are not a U.S. citizen)

You can still attend even if your 2008 income information is incomplete or you forget something. You may file your FAFSA after the event once you do have the materials. You don't want to miss out on the valuable instruction provided at College Goal Sunday.
