Registration Anticipation

Have you met with your advisor yet? Fall schedules have arrived and priority registration begins today. You can find your assigned registration time by looking in your Solar account under “Enrollment Appointment” and click “details”.

Be sure to meet with you advisor soon if you have not done so already. It’s not too late to register for summer either. Ask your advisor for details at your meeting for fall about summer options.

Step outside of the box this summer and think about gaining volunteer and professional experience. Use your summer job to explore career options. The Advising Center and Career Center are great places to start some research.

Planning for Fall

Welcome back from Spring Break. I hope you had a wonderful time and had some fun!

Now back to reality…second eight week classes begin this week. It may take a little time to adjust to a new class in your schedule. If you are having trouble, contact your advisor or the Advising Center right away.

Monday, March 24th begins registration for summer classes. The summer schedule is online now. Fall will be coming soon. Be sure to make an appointment with your academic advisor as soon as possible. If you advisor is in the Advising Center, just call 262/595-2040 for an appointment. Not sure who your advisor is? It’s listed in your Solar account. Your registration date and time will also appear in your Solar account once they are posted. Remember, you must meet with your academic advisor before you can register.

Let’s hope the snow is behind us and we can look forward to a warming trend for spring. Best of luck with the last half of your spring semester!

Just wanted to touch base with you regarding upcoming dates. Friday, March 14th is the last day to drop a class or withdraw from the university without an appeal. There is a $15/credit fee to drop/withdraw. If you are thinking about doing this, please contact your advisor to discuss options.

Summer and fall schedules will be out soon! Be looking for those on Parkside’s website at the Registrar’s site. Don’t wait to make your advising appointment. Prime times fill quickly. If your advisor is located in the Advising Center, call  262/595-2040 or stop into Wyllie 107 to make your appointment for creating your summer or fall academic plan.

Second eight week classes begin Monday, March 24th. If you have registered for a second session course, be aware that it will begin after spring break. Check your schedule for dates or contact the Advising Center for more information.

I hope that things are going well so far this semester. Spring break is approaching and I hope you have exciting plans during that well deserved week away. I’d love to hear what great places you are going for spring break so send me an email or a picture once you are back on campus.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.  Best Wishes ~Tina

Northern Illinois University Alumni

Niu_black_ribbonIn the days following the tragic NIU events, I feel compelled to say that I am a proud Alumni of Northern Illinois University. When something like this happens, you don’t know what to do. It hits so close to home. I know that campus so well having earned my bachelor and master degrees there.   I know many students, staff, and faculty on NIU’s campus. I received an email from my former professor which said she was safe but heard the gunshots from her office. That sent chills up my spine. I’m not sure why I’m sharing this. Sometimes sharing is part of the healing process. I offer my condolences for those lost in this tragedy and my support to the survivors.

Winter Blah's

Is anyone tired of winter yet?  This is the worst winter I can ever remember.  I don't like winter anyway and then add the number of snow storms we have had, it's just to much for me.  Spring break can't get here fast enough in my book.  I'm trying to use this time to get ahead so when that first wave of warm weather hits (or even about 32 degrees at this point), I'll have the time to have some fun.  I hope you are using this time to get ahead on your studies and projects.

Snow_on_treesgif The semester is pushing ahead despite the cold temperatures.  Just a reminder about some important dates coming up...Monday, February 18th is the last day to drop a class without a transcript notation of "W".  At this time, there is a $15 per credit drop fee.   Friday, March 14th is the final day to drop without an appeal.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your academic advisor or the advising center.  You can always contact me as well, plasmier@uwp.edu.  Stay warm!

Welcome Back!

Time can go so fast when you’re having fun! I hope you enjoyed the break and were able to rest and relax. It’s time to get ready for another semester.

The beginning of the semester can be overwhelming but try to think of it as a new start. It’s a time to take what you have learned from past semesters and put it into practice.  New classes and expectations.  Start out on the right path. Be sure to have a calendar to write all assignments and exams in right away. This will help you prioritize your time throughout the semester.

Be sure to check your schedule on Solar. Check to see that all your classes are listed as being enrolled. If there are any problems with your schedule, see your advisor right away. Keep in mind the important deadline dates. You can make changes to your schedule within certain guidelines. For example, the last day to drop a class without paying the $15 per credit drop fee is Monday, February 4th.  Be sure to consult the spring schedule book for dates as well as your advisor with any questions.

Wishing you a very successful spring semester!

V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N

Is there anything better than that word?  Not for me! I’m looking forward to some time with my family this holiday season. A trip to a warm weather place is in our plans and after all this snow, I can’t wait to see some green grass and sandy beaches! What types of things are you doing on your break?  What have been your favorite vacations in the past?  I truly believe that traveling has made me a better person.

Flacruise_1508_258

It’s been great to get out and see other cultures and landscapes of the world. I encourage you all to get out there and enjoy life either through traveling or just being with family and friends. If you want to see more of my vacation pics, visit the photo album at the top left of this page.  Happy Holidays!

Finals Week

You made it! Congratulations, you made it to the end of the semester. Wrap things up here on campus for the fall semester and look forward to the spring semester. Make sure that all your finals are complete and all papers are turned in. Check your Solar account to be sure you don’t have any holds. If you do, be sure to clear those up before the spring semester.

Also, be checking your Solar account for your grades after the first of the year. If you fall below a 2.0 gpa, you will be on probation. Be sure to check out Academic Status to understand what that means and next steps to take. If you have any questions about your status, contact the Advising Center at 262/595-2040.

Santa This has been a great semester. I’ve enjoyed working with so many new students and am sad but proud to have many of my students graduate this week. Have a very happy and safe holiday season. I look forward to seeing you in the spring!

Happy Holidays!

Crunch Time

I'm not talking about the crunches we do at the gym, I'm talking about this crazy time of year. I've been terrible at keeping up with my blog.  It's been SO long since I've had a chance to write anything.  That is a perfect example of how busy everyone is at this time of year.  You probably have projects, papers, and finals all due in the new two weeks.  There's also holiday shopping and parties to fit into your busy schedule.  Finally, you need to think about next semester with priority registration being right now!

How can we get everything done and not freak out?  I certainly don't have the answers but I can tell you what I try to do: prioritize and take care of yourself!  Use your calendar to identify time for each activity from study time to writing a paper and even time to work out or holiday shop.  It's easy to forget time for yourself when you are busy with the end of the semester but if you can set some time aside, you'll be much happier and pulled together.

As an advisor, I also have to remind you not to forget about registering for next semester. You need to meet with your advisor as soon as possible if you haven't already.  Your registration time is listed in your Solar Account. It's called your enrollment appointment time.  This is the time you register not the time you meet with your advisor. Meeting with your advisor needs to happen before this time.  Look through the spring schedule ahead of time and have some classes picked out, this will help things go faster when it's time to register since for many of you, registration is during the last week of classes. Don't get overwhelmed.  If you're having trouble getting everything together, meet with your advisor or someone you trust to talk things through.  You don't have to handle it all alone. Hang in there and enjoy the holiday season!

TOP 10 THINGS TO DO BEFORE SEEING YOUR ADVISOR

It's that time of year...time to think spring.  Spring schedules are now online.  You must meet with your academic advisor prior to being able to register.  Take a look in your Solar account to find out your enrollment appointment time.  You must meet with your advisor prior to that date and time.  Here are some tips on how to prepare for your advising session:

TOP 10 THINGS TO DO BEFORE SEEING YOUR ADVISOR

10. Declare any majors, minors, or certificates which you have decided on.

9. Take a look at the green sheet and catalog to get an idea of what classes you need.

8. Find out who your advisor is!

7. Make sure all financial holds are removed before your registration date.

6. Assess how this semester is going. Do you like your current schedule? Are you taking a comfortable number of credits? How much are you working? The answers to these questions can help you and your advisor prepare the best schedule for spring.

5. Get a copy of your DARS report from the Advising Center. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to read it, your advisor will help.

4. Write down a list of questions to ask your advisor. These can be questions about the current semester, majors/minors/certificates, or anything that you need to know.

3. Take a look at the spring schedule to have an idea of what courses you might be interested in.

2. Make an appointment that works well for you and your advisor. This is a busy time for advisors so make appointments well in advance of your registration date.

1.  Relax, breath, and make the most of your time with your advisor.
