Student Spotlight: James Gorman
Career Goal: My career goal is to continue to be a researcher/analyst involved with international relations, specifically those that involve human rights. I hope to work in academia, a government agency, or in a non-profit organization. At some point, I also hope to pursue a Ph.D in political science.
Major: International Studies and Political Science
Concentration: International Relations
Internship Experience:
- Internship Title: Management Intern
- Company/Agency: Shalom Center of the Interfaith Networks
- Internship Projects: Worked in the INNS Program which is a nightly homeless shelter. Here James would explain the guidelines and procedures for the new guests/intakes. He was in charge of the nightly check in of the guests. He was also in charge of assigning tasks to guest as well as monitoring the guests’ adherence of the guidelines.
What did you like most about your internship?
James enjoyed the feeling that he was helping, the homeless and the community, because he was able to help out through a hands on sort of way. He was able to actively help the guests with creating and editing resumes as well as the job hunting process. He often was able to give the guests rides to the bus stop or pharmacy which were essential locations needed to help the guests sustain a healthy lifestyle. James especially enjoyed those drives because he was able to develop friendships with the guests and connect on a more personal level.
Have you gained experience in other ways?
James has participated in a foreign service learning project in Chiapas, Mexico. Through the volunteer with the non-profit “Schools for Chiapas” program, he was able to work with the indigenous people of Chiapas. He felt this was a valuable experience because he was able to see people living in poverty in a developing nation which lead to his greater understanding of the community. He also gained firsthand experience into the difficulty of the fundraising efforts of that take place in an international non-profit.
Favorite quote: “From caring comes courage.” –Lao Tzu
What advice would you give to current college students?
James would like to encourage every college student to pursue an internship while he/she is still in college because he believes there is valuable experience within internships. James also suggests that students should take classes in a variety of fields to find out what interests them.
Hobbies, fun facts, and additional information
In his free time, James loves playing with his son and cooking meals with his wife.
Last word:
“At a time of increasing lack of confidence in governments I feel the importance of non profits is greater than ever.”
