According to the voice of the Rangers, UW-Parkside radio play-by-play announcer Dave Buchanan, there were some folks who left last night's men's basketball game against Indiana of the Northwest Territories (or something like that). Well, ya know, a lot of times when you're down by 27 points ... 2-7, three short of 30 ... with a little more than a half of a half of basketball to play (unless we're talkin' NBA) you can turn out the lights.
But not last night.
Thanks to 32 points in the second half ... the second half ... from LaVontay Fenderson, the Rangers rallied for a 91-88 V-I-C-T-O-R-Y! Talk about smokin'!
LaVontay finished with 44 points and said he was having so much fun he just wanted to keep playing! Sam Katula added 18. How does a 44-point night stack up all time at UW-P? Glad you asked:
1) Andy Schmidtmann, 52 vs. Lakeland
2) Abdul Jeelani, 47 vs. Northern Michigan
3) Abdul Jeelani, 47 vs. St. Xavier
4) LaVontay Fenderson, 44 vs. Indiana Northwest
5) Leartha Scott, 39 vs. Loras
5) LaVontay Fenderson, 39 vs. St. Martin’s
7) Dennis Davis, 38 vs. Northeastern Illinois
8) Leartha Scott, 37 vs. UW-Platteville
8) Leartha Scott, 37 vs. North Texas State
8) John Evans, 37 vs. Concordia (WI)
8) Dayon Ninkovic, 37 vs. Olivet Nazrene
Buchanan thought the play of the game happened with about six minutes to go and the Rangers still down by 19. D.J. Dantzler made the first to two free throws, missed the second, the ball was rebounded by Katula, who scored, was fouled, and made the free throw ... the Pontiac, game-changing play of the game!
Moral of the story: The next time you're at a Rangers game and if by some weird alignment of the planets we find ourselves down by 27 with 12 minutes to play ... DON'T LEAVE!
