The Month in Review

April is a funny month around here.  While the students are essentially winding down to the end of the semester (and some ending their undergraduate career!) a number of staff members are winding ‘up’!  We’re getting everything set for commencement and closing out the semester/year.  An Orientation has already taken place…so; really we’re already looking ahead to Fall!  (Welcome new students!!)

It’s basically a month of transition!

Today, I heard a presentation by a few Sociology/Anthropology students reporting on an alumni survey that was done in 2007.  They had a reasonable response rate of 25%, so I want to thank the folks that took the time to give them the feedback they were looking for.  It was also interesting to hear what the alumni had to say.  The information was more directly focused on the department, and it was obvious to me that the faculty there were listening to the information and would talk about how to use it!

I appreciate the students and the department seeking information from our alumni…a valuable resource!

I appreciate the alumni for giving these students a great learning opportunity…thanks for giving back!

On my schedule today was also a meeting to make plans for the university’s 40th Anniversary!  We hope to have a nice array of celebratory events for you to take part in!  I'll keep you posted! (Or, send me ideas!)

A little bit of the past, some of the present, and looking toward the future!  Just another day at UW-P!

The Week in Review

Earlier this week I attended the RAMAC (Racine Area Manufacturers and Commerce) Annual Dinner.  The event features Business in Excellence Awards, and as always, there was UW-P representation!  The Business Person of the Year is Bob Toeppe '73.  Bob is President of Wisconsin Plating Works.  Congratulations, Bob!  You can see a profile about Bob on our website at http://www.uwp.edu/news/daily.communique/newstemp.cfm?personID=27&storyid=2304.

Within RAMAC there is the Racine Technology Organization which presents a Technology Partnership Award.  This award went to Alliance Enterprises for a new product they developed.  Alumna Jacquelyn Brandenburg '07 was an integral part of that project.

I also ran into other alumni at the event...It was nice to catch up with Jeff '04 and Tabitha '07.  There were others in the crowd of 428, but just not enough time to chat with everyone!

By this time you should have received your Perspective magazine in the mail.*  I hope you've read it front to back!  Don't worry, there won't be a quiz....it's just packed with lots of great info!  Please, keep us posted on anything that's new with you, so we can list it in future issues or let us know if you move, so Perspective can arrive in your new mailbox!

*If you did not receive Perspective, we must not have your current address, please use the update form on the alumni web page or email university.advancement@uwp.edu with your current info.

Sending off the Seniors

Img_0181 Our semesterly tradition called Senior Send Off took place last week!  It's our time to check in with the Seniors just before they graduate!  I have the fun part...I get to welcome them to the Alumni Association!  Usually, I also try to have a prize or something fun for them.  This time, a treasure chest with UW-P flash drives in it!  They just had to pick a key and hope that it was the one to unlock the box!  On the first day, the odds were about one in twenty.  I had one winner.  The second day, the odds got as high as 50%...and it took SEVEN tries to get a winner!

There were a total of four winners...see the pics in the photo album and congrats to Kerry, Kim, Gadeer and my friend who didn't want her photo taken!  Congrats to ALL of the seniors...only one more month to go!

Special thanks to the seniors who told me they are already watching the alumni website AND are reading my blog!  Yay!

Get ready world, there are over 450 Parksidians (I made that up and really like it!) about to dazzle you!  Let the countdown begin!

It's so great to have alumni back on campus to share their successes, experiences and memories with the current students.  This week there were three events that brought alumni back to campus...

The Molecular Biology Alumni Night included Doug Drury '05, Pete Pioli '06 and Kristi (Mico) Ladvienka '00/'MAMB'03 as speakers!

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity's 'Ask an Alum' event included Tremayne White '06, Felita Singleton '07 and Keith Richmond '02!

Multicultural Professional Day had a panel of alumni that consisted of Vinnie Correa '00, Sheila Egerson '98, Gary Smith '94, Gary Nephew '92 and Kong Yang '07.

Thanks so much to those alumni for their time and involvement!

Top O' The Mornin' To Ya!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

I have to say that I considered wearing green today...I dressed my kids in green.  But, as I got to thinking, it just seemed strange to wear green Today! because I wear green a lot.  So, if I wore it today, would anyone around here (not that there are many around here...it IS Spring Break y'know!) really notice that I was wearing St. Patty's green or would they just think it's another day at UW-P!

Hmmmmmmmm!

Green is Good

I really love Green Tea!  Ask anyone!  I Have to have my Green Tea every morning or I'm just not ready to start my day!  Well, it hadn't occurred to me until today that it's also just one more way that I show my UW-Parkside pride!

Today was especially delightful because in the frenzy of activity at the coffee and tea counter in Wyllie Market I was treated to a Random Act of Kindness when Patrick McGuire put my tea on his tab! THANK YOU, Patrick!

So, for today...stop through the Starbucks drive thru (don't think I'll get anything for that endorsement, but I do like the Tazo Zen...if you'd like other Green Tea recommendations...Dunn Bros. serves Mighty Leaf Teas, which are awesome...let me know, I love to chat 'tea'!), get your Green Tea (Go Rangers!) and get one for the car behind you!  It will make you Both feel good!

Road Trip!!!!!!!

I LOVE road trips!  I don't know what it is, but I love packing up the car and driving around.  I especially like stopping to take pictures with any fiberglass structures in site!  Perusing road side gas stations is also immensely entertaining for me!

Well, I don't know how much influence can be had with a driver of a bus, but here's a great Road Trip opportunity as our basketball teams wind down the season:

There are still seats left on a bus heading to Indianapolis to see both of our Ranger basketball teams play.

The bus would leave the SAC on Saturday February 23 at 6:30am.
Head to Indy in time to see the women play at 12:00pm, followed by the men at 2:00pm (Both Eastern Time).
After the Men's game, the bus would head back to Kenosha with an expected arrival of 8/8:30pm.
Cost of the bus is $22.  Ticket for both games is $6.

****Then, join us for the last game of the regular season schedule, here at UW-P on March 1!****

Hola UW-P!

Please excuse this blogging interruption, but Mike and I just HAD to escape this snow for a little vacation in Mexico!  Our trip was delayed several hours due to that lovely snow storm that dumped about fourteen inches of snow on our house!  I do think that helped us appreciate our days in the Caribbean just a little bit more.  However, today, as I look at the photos from our trip...it's hard to believe I'm back in a turtleneck watching the snow flurries out my window!  UGH!

Anyway...on a happy note, I hope that many of you get a chance to unwind with whatever vacation you enjoy most!  If you are traveling, wear some UW-P gear and send me a photo!  I'd love to post it on our site!  If you'd like a little pennant for a photo prop, send me an email and I'll get one out to you!*

Or, for those of you who enjoy our winters!  That's excellent!  Send me a photo of you buried in the white stuff!  What about a UW-P snowman!  I might have a prize for the best one!

Either way!  Have fun!

*While supplies last, of course...and, on the condition I get that photo!  :)
