As part of Multicultural Professional Career Day on Friday, February 13, there was a session on Speed Networking! Dana Grueter '05, Director of Young Professionals of Racine, led a group of over 40 students and fourteen alumni through the exercise designed to help participants get past that awkward "Hi, my name is..." part of events. In Dana's words, speed networking is "meeting people really quickly!"! She challenged the group to craft their 'elevator speech' which is what you might say to that unknown person you're riding with on an elevator. It takes about two minutes to ride from the first to the third floor and the person you're riding with could be the catalyst to an opportunity you never knew existed! In your two minutes you should give a relevant snapshot about yourself, but also take time to learn about the other person!
On their marks, get set, GO! These students were naturals...they got right into the networking and moved around the room getting to know one another.
The students ranged from those in their first year to many who will depart the University this May! The alumni included: Walter Ulbricht '74, Peggy Karls '04, Gary Smith '94, Franca Carls '90, Michelle Nevarez-Larkin '98, Jasmine Reed '08, Colleen O'Gilvie '05 and Martha Nicks '01.
