I don't want to brag too much, but this gig in Alumni Relations lands me some pretty sweet opportunities! For instance, yesterday, I had a backstage pass! My son and I got a special tour, with some behind-the-scenes access, of Kenosha's Civil War Museum! Two members on the Alumni Association Board work for the museums, and yesterday, Gina Radandt '90, gave us a great tour of the exhibits and showed us around this new building!
This museum just opened last summer and I have to honestly say that I wasn't in a hurry to check it out, but am SO glad I did! The main exhibit is very creatively presented with a variety of ways to learn about this time in history...displays, artifacts, written information, spoken information and additional interactive segments! We could only stay for the tour, but I'm looking forward to going back and really spending some time in the exhibit!
Many of you probably know that the Kenosha Museum consists of three museums -- Civil War, Public (natural sciences and fine and decorative arts) and Dinosaur Discovery. Also, just across the harbor is the Kenosha History Center! All of this could make a really nice daytime adventure (you can even use the electric streetcar to access the first three museums). It's an especially nice mix with kids...for interest and attention span! And, all are very reasonable, or free!
There are great museums (historical and art!) all around and I encourage you to Be A Tourist in YOUR Hometown! Check out the great things that are right there and we sometimes overlook. Also, consider becoming a member of these establishments! You can help sustain these great organizations and honestly, it's often a reasonable cost that pays for itself quickly! One stop at each of the museums with my kids and our membership is more than paid for, especially since we go much more often than that...plus we get discounts on classes and at the gift shops!
Get out and see the sights!!! Let me know if you see any UW-P alumni (because you will!)
THANKS AGAIN, GINA!
