UW-PARKSIDE EXHIBIT FEATURES ‘FAMOUS 3 D’ ART FACULTY SEP. 28-OCT. 22
KENOSHA, Wis.—The University of Wisconsin-Parkside Art Dept. proudly presents its second exhibition of the academic year featuring three distinguished members of the department. Titled “The Famous 3 Ds,” this is a showcase of works by professors Doug DeVinny, David Valentine Holmes, and Dennis Bayuzick. The exhibition opens Monday, Sept. 28 and continues through Oct. 22.
A nationally known and respected print maker, DeVinny will show a variety of his latest prints during the exhibition. He recently retired from the university after 30 years of teaching with the stated goal of spending more time in his studio creating new print pieces.
“These works are based on a series of abstract copper plate engravings the inspiration of which comes from organic root forms along Pike Creek in Petrifying Springs Park [in Kenosha County], “DeVinny stated. “I used one of the earliest intaglio print processes, engraving, to develop a series of images that are digital and only possible with a computer.”
Known for his whimsical “found art” sculptures, Holmes’ “Mystical Mechanical Menagerie” show toured nationally and his works have been shown at the Smithsonian, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Milwaukee Art Museum. He will show eight new portraits that combine acrylic painting and found art along with free-standing found art sculptures.
As Holmes put it: “This is a new series of portraits with most being of myself. These are meant to be strange—yet whimsical—investigations, not necessarily about the model but my own enigmatic inventions.”
Holmes noted there will be nearly 100 years of UW-Parkside teaching experience on display during “The Famous 3 Ds” exhibition.
Bayuzick contributes his paintings in oil and acrylic to the show. Often selected as a featured artist at juried exhibitions across the state, Bayuzick’s detailed pieces require close examination by viewers. Check each one for a likeness of the artist hidden in the image.
"I always include self-portraits in my still-lifes because they are an ongoing challenge and they test my painterly and figurative skills. Plus, I'm always available and free as a model,” Bayuzick said.
The show opens Sept. 28 with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Communication Arts Gallery. Refreshments are served. Exhibition hours through Oct. 22 are Mondays noon to 5 p.m., Tuesdays and Wednesdays 3 to 8 p.m., and Thursday’s noon to 5 p.m.
